About Us

The Central Arizona Speculative Fiction Society (CASFS) is an IRS recognized 501(c)3 organization that promotes interest in science fiction, fantasy, media and science. In past years CASFS has sponsored SciFi/Fantasy conventions, gaming conventions, as well as special events.

CASFS was incorporated in 1979 by a group of Arizona and California fans after their attendance at the 1978 Worldcon, also known as Iggycon.

CASFS also sponsors a Book Social Usually held the Third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM at the the Denny's at 3456 West Bethany Home Road in Phoenix, AZ. This is a spirited discussion about current books and past favorites, plus other things that happen to cross our minds such as movies and TV shows.

In addition to the annual CopperCon convention, past events that we have sponsored include HexaCon (a gaming convention), SmerfCon (a conrunners event), PhringeCon (an SF media convention), and the 1982 and 1992 Westercons (regional sci-fi/fantasy conventions).

CASFS, in cojunction with WSFA has held two Cokocon conventions in 2018 and 2019. Unfortunately the 2020 event had to be cancelled due to Covid 19 concerns. The 2021 convention was virtual on Discord and Zoom. We were back in-person again in 2022 and 2023. There is consideration on having Cokocon as a virtual event in the not-so-distant future. See www.cokocon.org for more info.

Our meetings are held on the last Friday of the month, except for October, November and December when we switch to the second or third Friday of the month.

Our in-person meetings were located in Denny's Restaurant in the Metrocenter area. Our meetings begin at 8:00PM, but many of us meet earlier to socialize over dinner.

Due to the impact of Covid 19, we transitioned to conducting our business meetings on ZOOM. Currently meetings are scheduled for January 31, February 28, March 28, April 25, May 30, June 27, July 25, August 29, September 26, October 17, November 21, December 19, 2025. Send an e-mail to info@casfs.org to receive info, see meeting Zoom links on "Contact Us" page. CASFS Bylaws and procedures are available by request. At some point yet to be determined, we will return to our face to face meetings in the Phoenix area, but we have actually found that it is more convenient for many people to attend online.
