About Us

The Central Arizona Speculative Fiction Society (CASFS) is an IRS recognized 501(c)3 organization that sponsors the CopperCon/CokoCon SciFi/Fantasy conventions. Our purpose is to promote interest in science fiction, fantasy, media and science. As part of that effort we occasionally have special events at our monthly meetings.

CASFS was incorporated in 1979 by a group of Arizona and California fans after their attendance at the 1978 Worldcon, also known as Iggycon.

CASFS also sponsors a Book Social Usually held the Third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM at the the Denny's at 3456 West Bethany Home Road in Phoenix, AZ. This is a spirited discussion about current books and past favorites, plus other things that happen to cross our minds such as movies and TV shows.

In addition to the annual CopperCon convention, past events that we have sponsored include HexaCon (a gaming convention), SmerfCon (a conrunners event), PhringeCon (an SF media convention), and the 1982 and 1992 Westercons (regional sci-fi/fantasy conventions).

CASFS, in cojunction with WSFA has held two Cokocon conventions in 2018 and 2019. Unfortunately the 2020 event had to be cancelled due to Covid 19 concerns. The 2021 convention was virtual on Discord and Zoom. We were back in-person again in 2022. COMING SOON: Cokocon 2023, see www.cokocon.org for details

Our meetings are held on the last Friday of the month, except for October, November and December when we switch to the second or third Friday of the month.

Our in-person meetings were located in Denny's Restaurant in the Metrocenter area. Our meetings begin at 8:00PM, but many of us meet earlier to socialize over dinner.

Due to the impact of Covid 19, we have been conducting meetings on ZOOM. Currently meetings are scheduled for July 28, August 18, September 29, October 20, November 17, December 15, 2023. Send an e-mail to info@casfs.org to receive info and/or Zoom link. At some point yet to be determined, we will return to our face to face meetings in the Phoenix area, but we have actually found that it is more convenient for many people to attend online.
